    In my San Antonio, Texas based Massage Therapy and Bodywork practice I often treat pain from various syndromes including Piriformis Syndrome. Like many painful conditions Piriformis Syndrome responds quite well to massage therapy and bodywork.

    What is Piriformis Syndrome?

    Piriformis Syndrome is the name of a painful nerve entrapment condition in which the sciatic nerve is placed under abnormal pressure by the piriformis muscle. The piriformis muscle attaches to the sacrum bone of the low back to the top of greater trochanter of the femur (thigh bone) and lies on top of the sciatic nerve. When the piriformis muscle becomes tight and enlarged, pain results from myofascial trigger points (knots) in the muscle, pressure on the sciatic nerve, and sometimes from the S-I Joint in the low back. Pain from Piriformis Syndrome is usually found in the extreme low back, buttocks, hip, and often the back of the thigh. Most of the time the symptoms are on one side, but may affect both sides in some cases. Additionally, people with Piriformis Syndrome often have trouble sitting for long periods and the pain may worsen when walking or squatting.

    What is the cause of Piriformis Syndrome?

    There are a number of causes for Piriformis Syndrome including direct blunt trauma to the buttocks, prolonged sitting while working or driving, Morton’s foot, or S-I Joint instability. Frequent or prolonged running on canted surfaces and participation in sports requiring quick lateral movement such as tennis, skiing, and basketball may also overstress the piriformis muscle and lead to Piriformis Syndrome.

    Massage Therapy and Bodywork for Piriformis Syndrome

    There are many ways that massage therapy and bodywork can be used to treat Piriformis Syndrome. The massage therapist will employ a number of techniques to relieve the condition. For example the massage therapist may use Neuromuscular Therapy or Trigger Point Therapy to eliminate myofascial trigger points in the piriformis muscle. The massage therapist could also use Myofascial Release techniques or Deep Tissue Massage techniques to release adhesions between the piriformis muscle and surrounding tissues while also using Muscle Energy Techniques to gently lengthen the piriformis muscle. Piriformis Syndrome also responds well to positional release therapies such as Ortho-Bionomy which work with the body’s nervous system to release muscles and improve joint movement in the area. In addition to working on the piriformis muscle it may be necessary to provide therapy for other muscles near piriformis and even to muscles opposing piriformis to improve muscular balance. Comprehensive treatment with massage and bodywork, in conjunction with a home program of stretching and exercise, usually helps to completely resolve Piriformis Syndrome.

    I have a friend who rarely wears make up, but wanted to doll herself up to attend a wedding. Within minutes of starting to apply her foundation, she was dismayed to discover it smelled terrible and was forced to scrub it off. Her make up, had obviously gone bad.

    How long can you really keep your make up before it turns bad and becomes a health hazard? Most make up does not require expiry dates or manufactured dates which makes it difficult to determine how old it is, even when you have just purchased it. However, most make up will not lose its freshness until after that package has been opened.

    Water based liquid foundation will last about a year, whereas oil based foundations can remain for about a year and a half. However, if the bottle is opened necked, rather than a pump or squeeze tube, the time is cut in half. Tilting the bottle against your fingers introduces oil, contaminants and bacteria to your foundation, reducing the lifespan.

    Pencil eyeliners are good for about two years, as long as you sharpen them regularly. Liquid eyeliners, on the other hand are much more susceptible to bacteria, and should be tossed out about three months after opening. Mascara is another easy target for contamination much like the liquid eyeliner, and should only be kept for three months.

    Molded lipsticks have a good long life of up to two years in fact. Glosses and liquid lip colours, however, should not be kept more than three months.

    Powdered make up, such as blush, eyeshadow and powder foundation has the longest shelf life of all cosmetics. You can keep these products for up to three years, as long as they are properly stored in a closed case. If the case is left open, however or the lid breaks, your make up is subject to dust, dirt and contaminants and could pose a health risk.

    While these guidelines are helpful, a little common sense should prevail. Brushes and sponges should be washed at least once a week in mild, soapy water. Make up wedges should be disposed of after a week or two at most. If any of your make up has a funny odour or looks odd, throw it out. Also, if you have been wearing make up during a contagious illness, such as influenza, you’ve probably contaminated it and you should just start fresh.

    The period often correlated with modern Indian cinema is supposed to have begun in 1970’s when commercial cinema came forth as a means of recreation for the general public and this continues with the contemporary Indian cinema today.     Our skin is always exposed to heat, cold and other environmental changes, so it is very important to take care of it. In this article we have included various natural skin tonics for you that are homemade but are very useful to nourish your skin.

    Skin tonics have two effects on your skin after cleansing.

    They remove the last trace of cleansing milk or cream.

    However oily your skin is, I would not recommend you to use skin tonic containing alcohol (often called astringent). I find these strips away the skins natural protective barrier and with prolonged use can sensitize the skin or cause irritation.

    There are lots of commercially available skin tonics but below I have given some ideas for homemade skin tonics using beneficial aromatherapy oils. By the way rose water and orange flower water can be bought at most good chemists.

    As with the cleansers the ratio is two drops of aromatherapy oil to fl oz (100 ml) of toner, either used singly or in combination.

    For normal skin – Add lavender, rose or neroli to rosewater or orange flower water.

    For oily skin – Add lemon, lavender, bergamot, juniper or ylang-ylang to which hazel.

    For acne/ pimples – Add rose, ylang-ylang, geranium or camomile to rosewater.

    For hyper-sensitive skin – Add camomile, neroli, jasmine or rose to orange flower water.

    As with cleansers all skin toners are kindest when applied to your skin with damp cotton wool. Gently wipe all over the face and neck, paying careful attention to the creases around your chin. If necessary, repeat once more.

    Most martial artists are in excellent health and wonderful shape. Yet to find out how a martial artist can increase their kicking speed one must look to the simple facts of conditioning. It is pushing yourself to get to the next level in your kicking and that means pushing your body as well.

    While it may seem crazy the first way to speed up the kicks is to slow down the body. One important aspect of martial arts is the need for long, lean and powerful muscles. To achieve that place an individual must stretch. Unfortunately that seems to be the part of a workout that gets overlooked. Doing stretching properly is even more important since it is to relax and release the muscles not shorten them in pain.

    Warmth is the crucial aspect to stretching. Getting up and stretching first thing is not the most effective way to help your body. After a night of sleep and little movement your muscles are tight and slow. Taking a hot bath or shower is a wonderful way to wake up the muscles warmly and get them ready for stretching. Once you are warm start moving to allow the blood to begin flowing throughout the body and relaxing your muscles.

    To kick higher you have to get stronger. Do this by adding extra weights to your legs during the day to push your normal activity to the next level. However, do not start kicking when you first put the weights on. Let your muscles get used to them. Just wearing them doing your normal activities is building up your muscle tone. When you feel like you are used to wearing them then you can start with low kicks to let your legs learn the new movement.

    Finding a target to kick at is a great way of developing your mind and body connection. Hang something six inches higher than you can actually kick and try to reach the object. This will motivate you to reach the item and will allow your eyes to see and the mind to understand that it has to do more.

    When you are used to the ankle weights try kicking with them on after proper warm up and stretching. This pushes your strength to the brink.

    Then have someone video record your kick and see if you are wasting any movements. Are you taking too many steps to set up? Are you adding an extra step that not only is taking away from your speed by telling your opponent what you plan to do? Watch the tape and see where you can economize your movements to create a smoother, faster kicking process.
